EMDR For Relationship Closure in Arvada, CO

Perhaps, you feel a bit stuck in the relationship department. You may be encountering the same patterns over and over in your relationships. You meet someone who seems great and you're excited about what could happen next, but then the old track starts playing in your mind like a record on repeat. It is reminding you of past hurts, telling lies about who you are or who your partner is. It feels like you're being haunted by the ghost of your past relationship.

You may be experiencing this if:

  • You had a horrible break-up

  • You're still getting over your first love or a really significant relationship

  • The whole relationship was pretty emotionally scarring

  • You lost your love in a sudden or traumatic way

  • You were ghosted and never learned what actually happened

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help by allowing you revisit those difficult memories in a safe environment with an experienced professional. While exploring these memories, you will be able to access the messages that get repeated in your mind in a new way. Being able to access these messages in this way will allow you to create new and healthier association with these past experiences. This then leaves room for more positive experiences in your relationships going forward.

What Can I Expect With EMDR?

The EMDR process will start out pretty similar to regular therapy, in that I will be gathering information about you like what you're noticing you keep doing in relationships, what your upbringing was like, what past relationships have been like and what your goals for therapy are. We cover those pieces in the first three sessions. From the fourth session and beyond we start focusing more on what skills you use to help yourself feel calm and grounded. I will teach you new coping and grounding skills, while learning more about the patterns that you get into in your relationships that you would like to change. Then we will look at the memories that have made those patterns feel necessary. Once we are clear on which memories we need to explore, we will engage in EMDR reprocessing.

This  reprocessing will look like some sort of bilateral stimulation, so a buzzer buzzing in one hand and then the other, or tapping one knee or shoulder then the other, or watching me move my fingers back and forth across your field of vision. While we do this you will be thinking back to your past memories. This type of reprocessing will allow you to move through these difficult memories in a way that will allow you to feel empowered, safe, make sense of what happened in a healthier way and allow the memory to no longer feel so overwhelming and distressing.

EMDR Therapy Intensives For Relationship Closure

If you're wanting the peace and freedom that EMDR for relationship closure could provide, but you're concerned about the time commitment, consider an EMDR Intensive for Relationship Closure. A therapy intensive includes all of the work that we would do in weekly therapy, but in a more condensed time frame. There are three parts: the 90 minute intake session before the intensive day, the 6 hour intensive day and the 90 minute follow up session after the intensive day. Below, is more information about what this intensive structure looks like.

First, you schedule your free 30 minute video consult to see if we would be a good fit.

  • There is no obligation to schedule an intensive during our call, it's just an opportunity to get your questions answered and help you decide on what is best for you.

Before your intensive....

  • You'll receive a workbook via email that you will complete before your 90-minute intake session. In the workbook, you will answer questions that will help me better understand you and what you'll need in our work together. Once you complete the workbook, you'll email it back to me before our 90 minute intake session.

  • During your 90 minute intake session, we'll touch base on the information from the workbook, I will gather information from you about your past relationships, your upbringing, who supports you now and which coping and grounding skills work best for you.

The day consists of....

  • Our day will start at 9am, we will check in about the itinerary and set your intention for the day before we begin our work.

  • Then we will start the EMDR process to start working through your past relationship hurts, so you can move towards greater peace when it comes to relationships

  • We will take occasional breaks throughout the day, as you need them. Snacks, beverages and a journal will be provided for you. You will also have a one hour break for lunch off-site.

After the intensive....

  • I will email you a summary of our day, and include any resources and materials that we discussed during our intensive.

  • You will schedule your 90 minute follow up appointment where we will check in about your progress and process anything that might still be lingering.
